The South Bank Colleges Environment
An in-depth look at the pilot deployed across GCSE revision and T-Level Healthcare Science cohorts — two very different student groups, one shared question: could grounded AI actually improve how they studied?
Breaking the One-Way Lecture
The first shift was structural: moving students away from static revision documents toward grounded notebook environments where they interrogate source texts directly, rather than receiving a summary and hoping it's accurate.
The Power of Grounded Citations
In our initial tests, ungrounded models hallucinated key historical dates and medical parameters. By migrating to closed-loop RAG via NotebookLM, every generated claim was forced to anchor back to a specific source page — turning "trust me" into "check page 12".
Personas in Vocational Learning
T-Level students engaged with "Dr. Evelyn Reed," a rigorous Clinical Scientist persona that rejected casual terminology and forced students to communicate using clinical standards — a small persona choice with an outsized effect on the precision of student language.
Observations
Across both cohorts, students shifted from passive copy-pasters into active interrogators of their source material, with measurable increases in vocabulary retention.
